Visit To Indian Street Food And Craft Beer

Curry and lager are one of those cliched British food and beer combinations, but rarely do you see great Indian food with great craft beer. Mayur Pate, owner of Indian restaurant Prashad—in Drighlington (between Bradford and Leeds)— and beer guy Marko Husak (owner of The Sparrow bar in Bradford), realized that and brought them together to create Bundobust, which I think is the greatest place for beer and food in Britain.

The idea is easy: it’s vegetarian Indian street food (even the most committed carnivores won’t miss the meat), cooked very well from great ingredients, served affordably, and with great beers on the side. The combinations aren’t forced and there are no menu suggestions for the beers, encouraging you to experiment with the dishes and the drinks.

The vada pav is one of my favorite things to eat in the whole world. It’s a spiced, fried-potato patty in a squidgy brioche bun with red and green chutneys. It’s so satisfying and comforting, and there’s no better veggie burger in the world. All the food is really excellent, so just order a few plates and share them with friends.

Their house beer is Bombay Dazzler, a Witbier brewed by the excellent Northern Monk Brew Co. It’s made with ginger, coriander seed, and cardamom, mirroring the spices in the dishes and adding a refreshing zing to the food. If you’re eating at the Leeds Bundobust, be sure to visit The Northern Monk Refectory (The Old Flax Store, Marshalls Mill, Leeds LS11 9YJ), the brewery’s taproom. It’s an easy 10-minute walk

from the restaurant.

Their first restaurant was in Leeds and there’s another in Manchester —both are excellent. At the time of writing in early 2018, a Liverpool branch has just been announced, with two more locations scheduled to open soon after.

The food at Bundobust is so good it has been recognized by the prestigious Michelin Guide.
