VALLDEMOSA – MIRAMAR -DEYA – SOLLER & ITS PORT – COLL DE SOLLER – ALFA-BIA – RAXA – PALMA (78 kms. long round trip)
This excursion is also a round trip and can be made either by car or by bus normally operating this service.
Starting from Palma the road lies through cultivated fields where many almond trees are encountered. One km. out we reach s’Esglaieta, a mere handful of houses beyond which thousand year old olive trees begin to be met. 13 kms. from Palma the scenery changes abruptly. Two lofty cliffs S Es-tret (the Narrow Pass) mark the beginning of the mountainous area. The road keeps rising and leaves below on the left the Son Brondo valley with its abundant greenery. 17 kilometers from Palma is Valldemosa, a pleasant village 400 meters high. On acount of its situation it is cool in summer and close to the capital it has always been the favorite resort of the well-to-do.
Harbour of Soller. Typical majorcan house.
La Real Cartuja (Royal Carthusian Convent), was founded in 1339 by King Martin who relinquished the palace of the Kings of Mallorca for the purpose of founding the convent. Of the Palace and the old monastery nothing remains now. The cloister Cloister of St. Mary its the oldest part, while the buildings around it date from the same period 17th century. The Church and the Cloister of the Convent (18th century) should be visited. The neo-classical church is ornamented with fresco paintings by Fray Bayeus; it has some remarkable choir stalls and the Pieta of the High Altar is the work of the sculptor Adrian Ferra. In the sacristy a reliquary of rich ornaments embroidered with gold and silver and an altar screen made of plaster are to be noted. In the cloister the old pharmacy with its 17th century phials and jars preserving some of the drugs dating from the time of the Carthusian monks who lived there until the year 1853, is kept intact. Here, lived during the winter of 1838-39 the celebrated novelist Georges Sand in company of her son and daughter, and the famous musician Chopin who composed here some of his well-known Preludes.
At Valldemosa St. Catherine Thomas was born and her birthplace is still preserved together with plenty of souvenirs of this 16th century majorcan Saint.
At Valldemosa one can find a number of estates with their stately country dwellings. The chief ones are: Pastoritx, Son Pax, Son Brondo, Son Salvat, Son Maixella, Son Puig, Sa Coma, Son Gual, Son Moragues, Son Ferrandell, Son Mas del Pla del Rei, etc., besides the Archduke’s at Miramar.
