On one hand, American business interests relished the commercial advantages that control over the Philippines, Cuba, and Guam promised, but alternatively, some Americans were skeptical and anxious over the implications of an American empire. The debate played out in the presidential election of 1898 between anti-imperialist, Democrat William Jennings Bryan, who argued that imperialism abroad would only bring despotism to domestic soil, and Republican and imperialist, William McKinley, who won a decisive victory. The economic and political respect and recognition that the victory over Spain afforded the United States propelled the nation into the foreground of global power and inaugurated an unprecedented sense of nationalism at the dawn of the 20th century.
