Schools and Language of France

All French children attend school until age 16. Some begin preschool as early as age two. Children go to primary schools to learn reading, writing, and other basic skills.

Next they attend secondary schools to learn more advanced subjects. After passing a difficult test, some students go on to universities.

France’s official language, French, is spoken around the world. Some people in France speak a dialect, or a local variation, of French. Others speak languages such as Alsatian, Breton, or Basque. These languages and French dialects are most common near France’s borders. This is where the languages and customs of the different countries overlap.
