If the Edinburgh Festival has a serious rival, it’s the Salzburger Festspiele (to 31 August: 00 43 662 804 5500; www.salzburgfestival.at). Of this year’s 181 performances, the operatic highlights promise to be the Mariinsky Opera’s War and Peace, conducted by Gergiev and starring Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Anna Netrebko (who is also singing Giulietta in Bellini’s / Capuleti e Montecchi), and Willy Decker’s production of Korngold’s rarely staged Die Tote Stadt. Guest orchestras include the Berlin Philharmonic (with Sir Simon Rattle) and Concentus Musicus Wien. Polyglot theatre-goers have a dozen productions to choose from, including German-language versions of The Seagull and Long Day’s Journey into Night, a Chilean production of Falk Richter’s Electronic City, left, and Brecht’s St Joan of the Stockyards in Catalan.
