Long ago, most of France was forested. Animals such as deer, wild boars, ibex, and even wolves roamed the woods.
Gradually, people turned almost all the forests into farmland.
Most of the wild animals died out.
More recently, France has set aside parks to preserve some of its natural lands.

Today, about one-quarter of France is wooded, much of it in the parks and mountains.
Some of France’s flowers, including lavender (below), C°mm°n types °f are grown especially for their scent. Factory workers trees include pine, turn the flowers into expensive perfumes. Ash, beech, cypress, olive, and oak.
