ESTALLENCHS – BANALBUFAR – ESPORLAS -ESTABLIMENS – PALMA (89 kms. long round trip)
We start out along the road skirting the western part of the bay past Terreno, Porto Pi and Cala Mayor; places already mentioned in the previous excursion. As far as Hotel Maricel,
7 kms. from Palma can be considered as a street of the city with buildings on both sides and ending the township.
8 kms. from where we started and on the right side, we pass Bendinat, a estate with beautiful gardens, where a palace was built in the XIX century. The road borders the seashore and along it we find several building sites, with modern buildings, hotels and restaurants. From Palma and as far as 25 kms. can be considered as a residential touristic one, with its several beaches girdled with trees, facing south, warm during the winter and quite fresh during the summer.
The most important centers of this touristic area are: Portals Nous, 10 kms. from Palma, Palma Nova and Magalluf 12 and 14 and Santa Ponsa 17 kms. which conserves remains of gothic fortifications and a beautiful garden of palm-trees. 23 kms. from Palma we find Paguera a beautiful summer resort, full of villas and residential houses on the border of the sea, 25 kms. from Palma we find Camp de Mar with its beach of fine sand.
On this road there is a zone full of historic remains. On the 10th of September 1229 the King Don Jaime I known as “El Conquistador†landed with all his army at “La Caleta†off Santa Ponsa. The spot is now marked by a large cross. From this point the army began the conquest of the island. Several battles were fought, the most important being the victory of the “Coll de la Batalla†at 16 kms., where the two brothers Moncada lost their lives; the consequence of this battle was that Palma was .
beseiged and conquered on the 31 December of the same year by the Christian army. Near this place and inside a little oratory recently built, we can find the “Piedra Sagrada†that was used as an altar by the bishop of Barcelona, Berenguer de Palou, when the first mass after the battle was said.
30 kms. from Palma we reach Andraitx, village of 6.000 inhabitants placed at the bottom of a valley and centre of numerous excursions. The most important of them are: The harbour itself (5 kms. by road). S’Arraco and San Telmo (7 kms. by road) and Trapa 2 hours on foot from S’Arraco. A maritime excursion can be organized either from Andraitx harbour or San Telmo,
both fishing hamlets, to the Dragonera, an islet 7 kms. long and with a hill of 300 m. with a lighthouse, separated from Majorca by a two miles sea channel.
