Ninety-nine percent of American hazelnuts are grown in Oregon, and the state’s hazelnut industry is a world leader in hazelnut research, with Oregon State University working with the state’s growers to develop new varieties that resist the destructive eastern filbert blight fungus. Hazelnuts are used for confections, including chocolates, and the nuts are pressed to create flavorful hazelnut oil. Hazelnuts, sometimes called filberts, are a primary ingredient in Nutella spread, used in Frangelico liqueur, and add a unique flavor and texture to a variety of other products.

Worth some $150 million per year in Oregon, hazelnuts rank among the state’s top agricultural products—no wonder they are the star attraction in the Mount Angel Hazelnut Fest & German Holiday Market, sponsored by the Mount Angel Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the Oregon Hazelnut Marketing Board and the Oregon Department of Agriculture. The

Hazelnut Fest’s German-style holiday market includes authentic German and regional arts and crafts, Oregon wineries and breweries, and of course foods that feature hazelnuts, all under one roof at the Mount Angel Festhalle. The festival charges no admission fee, parking is free, and live music entertains the crowds throughout the event, which runs from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday and 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday. The festivities kick off with the annual Run for your Nuts 5K road race on Saturday morning, in which runners receive hazelnuts at the finish line; for more information about the run, visit www.racenorthwest.com.

Mount Angel, a wonderful place to explore, is located in the foothills eighteen miles northeast of Salem on State Highway 214. This little town, founded in the late 1800s by German settlers, has an Old World flavor, which is heightened by the many Bavarian-style storefronts and signage. Widely known for throwing the Northwest’s largest Oktoberfest, Mount Angel, in addition to the Hazelnut Fest, also hosts an annual Wurstfest (see post 69), celebrating the renowned German sausages.
