Teen Parents Transitions to Parenthood Interviews with pregnant African American teen mothers reveal stages they go through as they develop identities as mothers. Their own initial reactions to learning they were pregnant were often negative, as were the reactions of their mothers and friends. Teen mothers felt others looked down on them and felt they were shameful; their mothers were disappointed, sometimes angry and rejecting, and sometimes overwhelmed with the prospect of another child to care for. About half of the fathers were positive, about one quarter ambivalent, and about one quarter negative, with percent denying paternity. Teen mothers felt the pregnancy brought many negative changes.
