Blaming oneself and feeling ashamed intensify feelings of depression and withdrawal that can continue on into adulthood. Changes in behavior are associated with the severity of the abuse and the age at which it occurred as well as the identity of the perpetrator. Some research suggests that the earlier the abuse occurred and the longer it lasted, the more behavioral effects are seen. Those who experienced abuse in infancy and the toddler years still showed differences in behavior from nonmaltreated children in the school years, and those abused in preschool were especially prone to developing aggressive and bullying behavior in the school years. The speculation is that ongoing stress is more disorganizing to the individual in periods in which the person is developing an understanding of the world and refining basic ways of relating to people.
