Map of Vigy for Elsewhere, as you drift through the rooms, are paintings by Jean-Baptiste Wicar (Virgil Reading Book VI of the Aeneid Before the Court of Augustus) and Francesco Hayez (Romeo and Juliet’s Last Kiss), as well as Canova’s sculpture Palamedes, a fine figure of a man from every angle. Upstairs, rooms have been laid out with original furniture, mostly of the Empire period. As much as the art or the building itself, though, Villa Carlotta is worth visiting for its expansive, fourteen-acre gardens, a beautifully ordered collection of camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas that stretches around and behind the house. You can use your ticket to come and go all day. ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE VILLA CARLOTTA By boat Boats (see p.189) stop at least hourly at Villa Carlotta on the route between Como and BellagioMenaggioVarenna. Alternatively, you could stroll here from the landing-stages at Tremezzo (450m south) or Cadenabbia (900m north) both are pleasant, attractive walks. By tourist train A motorized mini tourist train called the Trombetta Express trundles to and fro along the lakeside road, from Lenno to Tremezzo, Villa Carlotta, Cadenabbia and Menaggio, making roughly hourly trips in each direction (May Sept daily 9am 10pm; Fri & Sat until 11pm; 5 one-way, 8 return, 12 day pass).
