Map of Vatan

Map of Vatan for ROUTES Because the lake is so long, the timetable is divided up into four broad sectors: the lower lake, between Arona and Angera; the central area between Stresa and Intra, including Pallanza and the islands; the northern section around Cannobio, Cannero and Luino; and the Swiss basin (Bacino Svizzero) around Ascona and Locarno. Within each sector there is reasonably frequent service (roughly every 30 60mins). Boats run between sectors, less frequently; quiet corners such as Ghiffa or Ranco may get just two a day. Most boats are ordinary passenger vessels. AL on the timetable denotes an aliscafo (hydrofoil) a faster ride (also marked SR, servizio rapido) that must be reserved in advance and commands a small supplement. Services start around 7am, and finish by 8pm, although the lake’s only traghetto (car-ferry), which also takes foot passengers, shuttles continuously between Intra and Laveno from 5am to midnight. Supplementing the main timetable, extra boats shuttle frequently between Carciano (near Stresa) and Isola Bella. You can easily put together a sightseeing itinerary using the widely available timetable leaflets. Check carefully the various symbols and colour-coded notes to identify each route’s days of operation; several routes change on Wednesdays (to take account of the market at Luino) and some boats run only on festivi (Sun and holidays).
