ANEMIA

Anemia is a condition of the blood in which there is a reduction in hemoglobin. It is characterized by loss of energy and pale gums. Usually the dog becomes listless, sleeps a lot and loses appetite. He loses weight and after a time becomes emaciated and dehydrated. Instead of healthy-looking red gums there is a paleness which goes from a light pink to a blanched white. The tongue also becomes pale-colored. The most common cause of anemia is infestation of hookworms.

A whiteness of the gums is indicative of an extreme loss of blood and is a serious condition. The blood loss can be the result of an accident or internal intestinal hemorrhage caused by hookworms or whipworms, certain types of poisons, or prolonged illness.
