The two are entirely separate today, but once shared a link. Shielded behind gates at the northern end of Piazza Mazzini stands the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, built in 1852 as a private house and converted into a hotel twenty years later under the name Grand Hotel Bellagio. For the best part of a century, this palatial affair competed with Bellagio’s equally grand Hotel de la Grande-Bretagne as to which could host the more sophisticated guests amid the more opulent surroundings, inspiring partisan loyalty among visitors and local residents alike (hundreds of whom were employed as hotel staff). In 1907, the Grand Hotel Bellagio acquired as an annexe the seventeenth-century mansion residence of the then-defunct Serbelloni family, which stood on top of the hill above Bellagio and it changed its name to Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in celebration. Barely two decades on, the Wall Street Crash of 1929 forced the hotel to sell its hilltop annexe, although it clung on to the Serbelloni name. Today, with the 213 5 BELLAGIO LAKE COMO Grande-Bretagne long derelict (despite its beautiful location partway down the Salita Serbelloni steps in town), the Grand Hotel offers Bellagio’s only five-star accommodation. Meanwhile, in 1959 the real Villa Serbelloni on the hilltop above passed into the hands of the Rockefeller Foundation. Map of Tajabad 2016.
