Map of Strathfieldsaye for ISOLE BORROMEE ?BORROMEO ISLANDS? LAKE MAGGIORE Under Carlo’s guidance, the architect Giovanni Angelo Crivelli designed terraces for the gardens and laid foundations for a grand house at the northern end of the island. In 1659, Carlo’s son, Vitaliano VI Borromeo, hired a new architect, Francesco Castelli, and the palazzo as it stands today began to take shape, with its grand salons, chapels and sumptuous galleries. Andrea Biffi took over in 1671, and it was under his stewardship that the palace and its monumental gardens became imbued with the High Baroque taste. Vitaliano died in 1690 with most of the work completed, although the vast, unfinished Salone dominating the northern wing of the palace, based on the plans of the San Lorenzo basilica in Milan, was redesigned in 1781 and only completed under Vitaliano X Borromeo as late as 1958. Visiting needs a tolerant frame of mind. Even if grand houses and formal gardens are right up your alley, your patience may still be tested by the size and bustle of the crowds. The best advice is to organize your transport so you’re already on the island when the palazzo opens in the morning; that way, you can have perhaps half an hour before the first of the tour groups arrives. The palazzo A tour begins at the piazza in front of the stepped harbour, enclosed by three wings of the palazzo. To the right is the Borromeosprivate chapel, built in the 1840s and housing the twin-arched tomb of Vitaliano and Giovanni Borromeo carved from Carrara marble. Map of Strathfieldsaye 2016.
