Map of Roja on JOSEPH GERINGER SYED B. HUSSAIN, PH.D. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN, OSHKOSH hegemony FIRST DEVELOPED BY THE Italian Marxist theorist Antonio Gramsci during the late 1920s and 1930s while he was in prison because of his opposition to fascism, the concept of hegemony has enjoyed a vast popularity throughout the 20th century. Coined in his Prison Notebooks due to Gramsci’s intellectual search for the reasons why the Italian working-class had deserted democracy and yielded to fascism, the term has not remained restricted to political theory but it has been widely applied to a number of cultural fields and disciplines: from history to literary studies, from media to film theory. Hegemony defines the winning of consent to unequal class relations, which it makes instead appear as natural and fair. Dominant elites in society, including but not limited to the ruling class, maintain their dominance by securing the consent of subordinate groups, such as the working class. Map of Roja 2016.
