Frowning down on the square is the Palazzo di Giustizia, built in the bombastic rectangular style of the Mussolini era, while the rather more elegant Torre dei Caduti (1924) rises ahead, above Piazza Veneto. Off to the west is pedestrianized Via XX Settembre, the city’s main shopping street, leading to the medieval porticoes of Piazza Pontida at its western end. Via Pignolo From the Sentierone, Via Torquato Tasso leads east into the oldest part of the Citt Bassa. Marking the junction with the old medieval thoroughfare of Via Pignolo is the Renaissance church of Santo Spirito, originally fourteenth-century, with Lorenzo Lotto’s altarpiece of the Blessed Virgin Enthroned (1521) and an eight-section polyptych by Ambrogio Bergognone (1507). The Borgo Pignolo formed in the Middle Ages as overspill from the upper town, and its main artery, Via Pignolo, has a largely unchanged appearance and ambience; narrow, broody and atmospheric, with many surviving architectural features such as balconies and mullioned windows.
