Those children who had the most difficult time recovering were those who had experienced a major loss before or after the hurricane, had limited family connections, and reported ongoing financial, family, and school difficulties. A study of Sri Lankan youth exposed to civil war, the tsunami, and daily personal stresses such as poverty, marital conflict, and abuse found that while disasters like war and the tsunami had a direct effect on feelings of depression, it was primarily the daily hassles that were the major sources of stress. The researchers pointed to the importance of community-wide, psychosocial approaches strengthening the systems that support children’s daily routines and activities as they contribute more significantly to children’s recovery than trauma-focused services that do not necessarily strengthen the major sources of children’s strength. Massage therapy was found to be helpful in reducing elementary school children’s feelings of anxiety and depression following Hurricane Andrew in Florida. Children on holiday who reported many symptoms of PTSD were assigned to receive back massages twice weekly for thirty minutes or to a control group who watched a video while sitting on the lap of a research assistant for the same amount of time.
