Undeterred, Bramante continued with a Greek-cross plan and solved the space problem by falsifying the perspective with the wonderful trompe l’oeil apse on the back wall. The fresco in the lunette above the altar records the story of the vandalizing of the Madonna. The octagonal chapel of San Satiro stands to the left of the altar and includes traces of Byzantine frescoes in the niches round the sides. Bramante’s plans for the facade were never realized and the current one dates from the nineteenth century. In the face of Protestant reforms, the Cardinal was concerned to defend Catholic traditions not only through doctrine and liturgy, but also by educating the faithful about their Catholic origins.
