Map of Platanos for If you’re approaching from Milan or Verona, the lower lake is likely to be your first encounter with Garda. In winter, and even at the top and tail of the season, this area can be bewitchingly beautiful, with snow on the peaks further north, a balmy climate, few hotels open and a lazy, introspective pace to life. But in midsummer, the lower reaches of Lake Garda can be as crowded as anywhere in northern Italy, with holiday-makers cramming the promenades and traffic clogging every road. The best advice, if you visit at this season, is to find yourself a bolthole-with-a-view and let the lake work its magic. At the lake’s southwestern corner stands Desenzano, a thoroughly likeable town with space to absorb the crowds. Nearby, little Sirmione occupies a peninsula projecting into the centre of the bay, its old streets heaving with sightseers. Further east, a succession of pretty and very busy lakefront villages line the shore around to the stylish little resort of Garda, beyond which rise the mountain slopes of Alto Garda (see p.290). A world away from the bustle of the lakeside roads, the rolling hills to the south of the lake are carpeted with vineyards and dotted with historical villages like Solferino and Vallegio sul Mincio.
