Travel Parenting in Divorced Families and Remarried Families The Process of Divorce Mavis Hetherington, who has carried out careful longitudinal studies of intact, divorced, and remarried families for four decades, describes four basic facts about divorce: divorce is not a single event but an event that triggers many changes for children and parents over time; changes associated with marital transitions have to be viewed as changes in the entire family system parents, children, and extended family members; the entire social milieu peer group, neighborhood, school, friendship network influences an individual’s response to the transition; and there is great diversity in the ways children and parents respond to marital transitions. Most studies of families in transition focus on European American middleclass families, and we do not know how widely we can generalize these findings. The changes of divorce new households, changes in finances, changes in parents and children’s moods and behaviors, increased responsibilities in caring for children alone all create stress for parents. Religious beliefs can increase or decrease the stress of divorce. When people believe divorce is breaking sacred vows, they are more likely to report depression at the time of divorce.
