Around the turn of the 19th century, many theorists of international politics including Princeton University’s Woodrow WILSON began to think about what came to be known as liberal internationalism; the development of international law and institutions and free trade as democratic, stabilizing, and peaceful substitutions for secret alliances and wars conducted by aristocratic European elites to correct imbalances of power.
