Map of North Uist for The sculptural highlights of the church lie in the two wings of the transept. In the centre of the north transept lies the stone funerary monument of the greatest of the dukes of Milan, Ludovico il Moro, and his wife Beatrice d’Este, neither of whom are actually buried here. Ludovico commissioned the piece for the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, where Beatrice is still buried, but it was moved here in 1564, forty years after his death; Ludovico himself is buried in France, where he died as a prisoner. The exquisite detail of the statue, by another of the ubiquitous Solari clan Gian Cristoforo is an important document of sixteenth-century fashions with its tasselled latticework dress and glam-rock platform shoes. Many of the church’s artworks are by Bergognone, including the fresco behind the funerary monument of the Crowning of the Virgin flanked by Francesco Sforza and his son, Ludovico il Moro. The south transept contains the magnificent mausoleum of the founder of the monastery, Gian Galeazzo Visconti, by Cristoforo Romano, including a carving of Gian Galeazzo presenting a model of the Certosa to the Virgin. Both he and his wife, Isabella di Valois, are buried here. The monastery Opposite the mausoleum is the door to the delightful small cloister, a reminder that the monastery was built for the contemplative Carthusian order rather than simply as a vehicle for wealthy families to buy their salvation. With fine terracotta decoration and a charming geometric garden, this was where monks shared the communal part of their lives, meeting here to pace the courtyard during their weekly ration of talking time.
