Originally consisting of plaster casts and drawings put together as a study aid for students from the Fine Arts academy, the collection was added to by works looted from the churches and aristocratic collections of French-occupied Italy when Napoleon decided to make it a public museum. Opened in 1809, the collection has gradually grown over the years, to the extent that plans are now being discussed to extend the gallery to the nearby Palazzo Citterio. It’s a fine gallery well organized, in chronological order, with good explanatory notes but it’s also large, and your visit will probably be more enjoyable if you’re selective. There’s a good audioguide available ( 5), although it does rather gallop through the highlights. Room VI Exiting the three rooms of early medieval works brings you face to face with the stunningly powerful The Dead Christ, a painting by Andrea Mantegna, the court artist in fifteenth-century Mantua responsible for the Camera degli Sposi (see p.346).
