Map of Mescoules

Map of Mescoules for Gargnano, also on Lake Garda, holds the annual Centomiglia sailing race at the beginning of September, and sailing is similarly popular on the other lakes, with many outlets such as at Sarnico on Lake Iseo, Dongo on Lake Como and Cannero on Lake Maggiore offering boats, boards and gear for rental, with and without tuition. All around the lakes, public lidos (most free of charge) provide perfect swimming conditions: it’s a good idea to bring rubber-soled shoes though for the stony beaches. The hills and mountains above all the lakes make perfect walking and mountain-biking country: tour operators offer many independent or escorted tours throughout the region, but it’s just as easy to strike out alone. Tourist offices keep details of walks in the vicinity, while those in popular walking areas such as Menaggio on Lake Como or Cannobio on Lake Maggiore stock hiking maps and detailed route descriptions, and can advise on particular trails to follow. Ask at the tourist offices in Ascona and Locarno for their resources for walkers, including details of circular trails between stations on the Centovalli railway nearby. Several high peaks in the area are easily reached by public transport, including Monte Baldo above Malcesine (Lake Garda), Monte Generoso above Lugano (Lake Lugano) and the Mottarone above Stresa (Lake Maggiore); when skies are clear, taking the train or cable car up in order to follow trails around their summits can offer breathtaking panoramic views. The Mottarone in particular has some excellent mountain-bike routes. By contrast, the flatter lands to the south of the region, around Mantua, Cremona and Pavia, are perfect for leisurely cycle rides or strolls. Tourist offices in all three cities keep details: one especially good route is the full-day bike ride between Peschiera del Garda and Mantua, following the River Mincio all the way.
