After the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991, Hungary developed close economic and political ties to Western Europe. In 1999, Hungary became a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Industry accounts for about a third of Hungary’s GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT (GDP), services 62 percent, and agriculture the rest. After the collapse of communism, Hungarian industries were ill-equipped to compete in the international marketplace and, during the first half of the 1990s suffered substantial economic fallout.
