Rapid immigration brought Jews to 31 percent of Palestine’s population by 1947, when the UNITED NATIONS proposed dividing it into a Jewish state with 500,000 Jews and 500,000 Arabs, an Arab state with mostly Arabs, and an international enclave of Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
