Map of Linieres-Bouton for You can visit the original reading room and other rooms but the main draw, however, is the largest bound collection of Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings and writings, known as the Codice Atlantico Leonardo. The extensive art collection may include many mediocre works of the Lombard school but there are some real gems, such as a rare painting by Leonardo da Vinci, MILAN CASTELLO SFORZESCO Portrait of a Musician, a cartoon by Raphael for the School of Athens fresco in the Vatican, and a Caravaggio, Basket of Fruit, considered to be Italy’s first-ever still life. Borromeo had met Caravaggio in Rome, where he had also become acquainted with Jan Brueghel, who was teaching at the Accademia di San Luca in 1593. The Cardinal was obviously taken with Flemish painting, building up a collection of works by Brueghel the Elder and Paul Brill, the highlights of which are the fantastical landscapes of Allegory of Water and Allegory of Fire by Jan Brueghel. The huge museum has been continually added to since the Cardinal’s death and now also contains a collection of objects and artefacts to complement the art. The prize for the quirkiest exhibit is shared between a pair of white gloves that Napoleon reputedly wore when he met his Waterloo, and a lock of Lucrezia Borgia’s hair displayed for safe-keeping in a glass phial ever since Byron (having decided that her hair was the most beautiful he had ever seen) extracted a strand as a keepsake from the library downstairs, where it used to be kept unprotected. Piazza dei Mercanti Piazza dei Mercanti, once the commercial centre of medieval Milan and now an almost forgotten corner of the city, stands northwest of Piazza del Duomo. Surrounded by medieval palaces, once the seats of guilds, the square was the city’s financial hub until the turn of the twentieth century, when the Borsa or Stock Exchange then housed in the sixteenth-century Palazzo dei Giureconsulti on Via Mercanti was moved north to a new building in Piazza degli Affari. The square is dominated by the Palazzo della Ragione, built in the early thirteenth century to a common European model: on the first floor was the Broletto or town hall which was used for council meetings and tribunals, while markets were held under the porticoes below.
