Dehydration in the sick dog is a symptom which especially has to be watched for. Also called drying out or being hide-bound, it is usually caused by diarrhea and vomiting, when more fluids are lost than are taken in. For survival the dehydration must be treated, and the vomiting and diarrhea must be stopped. Normally the loose skin on the back of the neck will quickly bounce back into place when pulled out, but with dehydration the skin remains pulled away from the neck and returns slowly. In the clinic the veterinarian combats dehydration with intravenous administration of saline
and glucose and with injections to stop vomiting and diarrhea.
