Middle-class families with dual incomes have more choices and do seek for optimal opportunities to balance both work and family responsibilities. Single Parents As we noted earlier, single mothers income is unstable and many changes in their work lives occur as a result of layoffs or work factors they cannot control. Many single mothers, however, make the same choices as dual-earner parents: to seek jobs that better fit families needs, working evening or night shifts so relatives can care for children, staying with a poorer-paying job because employers permit them to take time off for family needs. Their choices are more constrained than dualearner couples, and regardless of what they choose, they experience many demands on their time and limited resources to meet their families needs. WAYS TO IMPROVE WORKING PARENTS LIVES A variety of programs, both public and private, can help working parents.
