THE NON-CUSTODIAL PARENT
No one has yet made a comprehensive study of what happens to parents and children after divorce but a number of different pieces
of research indicate that perhaps half of all parents without custody mostly, but not exclusively, fathers – lose contact with their children within a few years of separation.19
Non-custodial mothers face special problems. It is still very unusual for mothers to decide that their children would be better off with their father and custody is normally only given to a father if his wife deserts him, leaving him in charge of their children. Many people still believe that children’s ties with their mothers are naturally much stronger than those with their fathers, and mothers who leave their children therefore experience much greater social disapproval than fathers who do so. As a result, such mothers often feel so guilty about what has happened that they find it easier to cut themselves off from their children completely.
