The gate theory of pain suggests that n Afferent nerves carry pain messages up to the substantia gelatinosa and then through the spinal gate mechanism to the brain. n At the same time, psychological processes influence the activity of nerves leading from the brain to the spinal gate. n Activation of both systems results in a variety of chemicals being produced within the gate substantia gelatinosa, some of which open’ the pain gate, some of which close’ it.
