The London Marathon assembles annually in Greenwich Park on the Grand Avenue, starts eastwards on Blackheath along Shooters Hill Road, before turning left down towards the River and then left again running westwards through central Greenwich. There were 35,000 competitors in 2011 and 37,500 in 2012. The London Wheelchair Marathon (opposite, bottom) takes place on the same day – the 2012 men’s and women’s races were won by Britons David Weir and Shelly Woods.
Through the year there are many other such events open to the public, with shorter charity runs and walks on Blackheath and round Greenwich Park.
The covered Central Market is open Wednesday to Sunday, and busiest at weekends and Bank Holidays.
