Map of Gela for It has been credited with being Milan’s first real Renaissance building because of its simple 76 1 MILAN THE NAVIGLI geometric design. The mixture of Lombard terracotta sculpture and Florentine monochromatic simplicity makes for an enchanting fusion of styles. It was commissioned from the Florentine architect Michelozzi in the 1460s by one Pigello Portinari, an agent of the Medici bank, to house the remains of St Peter the Martyr. Peter, one of Catholicism’s less attractive saints, was excommunicated for allegedly entertaining women in his cell, then cleared of the charge and given a job as an Inquisitor. His death was particularly nasty he was axed in the head by a member of the Cathar sect that he was persecuting near Lake Como but the martyrdom led to almost immediate canonization and the dubious honour of being deemed Patron Saint of Inquisitors. St Peter the Martyr’s wildly elaborate tomb is crowded with reliefs showing scenes of his various miracles and supported by statues of the eight Virtues. The wonderful frescoes on the walls and ceiling are attributed to Foppa; the goldcloaked figure half hiding from the scene in the right-hand lunette of the right wall is said to be a self-portrait. The rainbow-coloured scales on the dome above the gaily dancing angels lead up to the Portinari coat-of-arms in the lantern directly above the spot where the banker is buried. The Navigli The southern end of Corso di Porta Ticinese is guarded by the nineteenth-century Arco di Porta Ticinese, an Ionic-style gateway, on the site of a medieval entrance to the city, built to celebrate Napoleon’s victory at Marengo.
