They are a direct influence when they act as mentors to their grandchildren and when they negotiate between parent and child. They influence grandchildren indirectly when they provide both psychological and material support to parents, who then have more resources for parenting. Grandmothers who do not live with grandchildren but have high levels of contact with them can provide the indirect support grandchildren facing certain risks need. For example, preschool grandchildren who were easily frustrated and emotionally reactive children at risk for social problems were able to develop abilities to compromise and cooperate with others when they had contact with grandmothers. Also relationships with grandmothers appeared to protect children from the effects of mothers harsh parenting.
