Map of Espergarde for Parking Parking in Switzerland is hellish, and can be very limited and prohibitively expensive. In cities, full car parks will quite often harbour queues of cars, their engines off, drivers waiting sometimes for over an hour for the next person to finish their shopping and so liberate a space. On-street parking and open car parks are colourcoded. Spaces delineated with white lines the White Zone are the most common, time-limited places controlled either by individual meters or, more usually, a prominently marked central pay-point or parchimetro collettivo, taking coins only. Outside the hours posted on the pay-point, and where there isn’t a machine at all (in a small village, say), White Zone spaces are free, unless there’s a sign reserving them. You can park in Blue Zone spaces if you have a special parking disc (available for free from tourist 30 BASICS ACCOMMODATION offices, police stations and banks, and generally supplied in the glove box of rental cars). Spin the wheel round to show your time of arrival and leave it on your dashboard: this gives you ninety minutesfree parking if you arrive between 8am and 11.30am or between 1.30pm and 6pm.
