Map of Costa Masnaga for it Pallanza’s major attraction is the garden of Villa Taranto. The house, built in 1875, was bought in 1931 by Captain Neil McEacharn, scion of a wealthy Scottish industrial family, who spotted an advert for it in The Times. Over decades, McEacharn landscaped and cultivated the grounds of the villa, planting seeds gathered from around the world and establishing an extraordinarily rich and varied botanical garden. He died at Villa Taranto in 1964 and is buried in a mausoleum in the grounds. The villa has its own landing-stage, a stop for virtually all Stresa Intra boats, though it can also be reached from Pallanza on foot or by bike on Via Vittorio Veneto (the walk takes about 30min). Via Veneto is a narrow, lakefront road which leads from the old harbour around the headland; it is one-way for cars towards Pallanza but most traffic is diverted elsewhere and virtually no vehicles use it. On the way, you’ll pass the tiny Isolino di San Giovanni, an offshore islet owned by the Borromeo; its villa, once a favoured haunt of Toscanini, has no public access. 3132 LAKE MAGGIORE PALLANZA ?VERBANIA?
