Map of Caybasi on From 1629 to 1640, he refused to call another Parliament and set out to rule on his own, raising taxes on his own authority. The most noteworthy fiscal act was his extension of the collection of Ship Money, a form of revenue designed to pay for the country’s navy and defense. Traditionally, this tax had been imposed on coastal ports involved in shipping. Charles began to collect Ship Money from across England, including towns and counties in the interior. His actions sparked opposition not only because of their economic impact, but also because they infringed on traditional local rights. Charles’ religious policies also alienated important segments of the population and eventually brought a further clash involving the issue of taxation. In the mid- 1500s the Protestant Reformation began to challenge the Anglican Church, the national church of England, that no longer accepted the authority of the Pope of Rome but still maintained many traditional Roman Catholic rites and doctrines, including the authority of bishops.
