Map of Bowers Gifford for Directly opposite, across the church, hangs Luini’s Adoration of the Shepherds (1526), while a little further along the south wall is his melancholy, heavy-lidded Madonna for the St Jerome altarpiece (1521), both works showing the artist’s debt to Leonardo. Duomo interior: east end Where two large organs face each other across the nave, the Gothic construction ends; the east end of the cathedral was completed under the influence of the Renaissance, COMO LAKE COMO with a distinctive lightness and symmetry of design. The north apse holds the colourful Altar of the Crucifixion, while the south apse has the Baroque Altar of Our Lady of the Assumption, completed in 1686 with twisting columns in black Varenna marble. The Renaissance main apse features the Altar of the Maestri Campionesi, consecrated in 1317 as the main altar of the old Santa Maria Maggiore church, and itself demonstrating another transition in style from the Romanesque, as seen in the figures of the saints, to the Gothic, exemplified by the flower-ornamented arches which frame them. Overhead soars the spectacular Baroque cupola, designed in the 1730s by the master architect Filippo Juvarra, its apparently small lantern illuminating virtually the whole building.
