After the war, Johnson no longer supported an expansion of the New Deal, but did look after the maintenance of Roosevelt’s social reform. Furthering his own tendency to lean toward the right, Johnson supported the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947 that helped to lessen the power of strong labor forces moving throughout the country. In 1948, it was clear that Johnson had made the correct political decisions to gain the support of the state of Texas, and defeated his Republican opponent for the senator’s seat in the U.S. Senate.
