In Switzerland Although Switzerland isn’t a member of the EU, citizens of European member states are entitled to emergency health care in the country under the same terms as Swiss residents. This effectively means that, on production of an EHIC (see p.43), the care will be subsidized but you will have to contribute to the costs: for example, there is a small charge for bed and board if you have to stay in hospital, although medical treatment is free. If you need an ambulance, you will be required to pay fifty percent of the cost (as local residents do) and there is usually a small standard charge for any prescribed drugs. Insurance Even though EU health care privileges apply in Italy, you’d do well to take out an insurance policy before travelling to cover against theft, loss, illness or injury. A typical policy usually provides cover for the loss of baggage, tickets and up to a certain limit cash or cheques, as well as cancellation or curtailment of your journey. Most policies exclude so-called dangerous sports unless an extra premium is paid; around the lakes this can mean windsurfing, canyoning and trekking. Many policies can be chopped and changed to exclude coverage you don’t need for example, sickness and accident benefits can often be excluded or included at will. Map of Bauvin 2016.
