Map of Bam for Other rooms hold his imperial-style bed and a collection of musical instruments, including a harmonium and a rectangular-cased fortepiano belonging to Donizetti’s patron and mentor, Simon Mayr. Via Colleoni Leading away from Piazza Vecchia, the narrow main street continues as Via Colleoni, lined with pastry shops selling chocolate and sweet polenta cakes topped with sugar-icing birds. Among the boutiques and shops, Sant’Agata del Carmine is an attractive single-naved church of the fifteenth century. Via Colleoni leads into the rectangular, tree-shaded Piazza Mascheroni; to the right, views open out over the city and mountains. Passing beneath the Torre della Campanella (1355), you enter the Piazza della Cittadella, a military stronghold built by Barnabo Visconti that originally occupied the entire western chunk of the upper town. The remaining buildings now house a small theatre and two didactic museums, one of archaeology, the other of natural history. Colle Aperto and San Vigilio The Colle Aperto, with views out beyond the city wall across Bergamo Bassa, is accessed through the outer gateway of the Cittadella. Just through the Porta Sant’Alessandro to one side, a funicular rises on a short, steep course to San Vigilio the walk alongside the track is also pleasant, up a steep, narrow road overlooking the gardens and villas. The view from the summit, topped by the Castello and a sprinkling of bars and restaurants, is wonderful. Map of Bam 2016.
