Map of Aberbargoed for It marks the beginning of the canal or Navigli neighbourhood, once a bustling industrial area and these days a focus for the nightlife of the city. Alongside, the forlorn-looking Darsena, or Basin, was the busiest part of the city’s canal system (see opposite), the main dock area for goods entering and leaving the city. This unloved body of stagnant water has been promised a new lease of life by an international architectural competition, which will remodel the basin and link it with newly created parks and bridges. This will hopefully spur the way for investment in the rest of the canal area, which although full of lively restaurants, bars and clubs in the evenings, promises much more than it currently offers to daytime visitors. Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese South from the Darsena, the Naviglio Grande and the Naviglio Pavese, respectively the first and last of the city’s canals to be completed, lead into the plains of Lombardy. Although the bohemian atmosphere of the area is somewhat over-hyped, it certainly shows a different side to Milan; this was Milan with its sleeves rolled up, the working city at its grittiest. Some of the warehouses and traditional MARKETS, FESTIVALS AND EVENTS ON THE NAVIGLI Throughout the year the Navigli hosts markets, festivals and events that keep the waterways busy. The useful website Wnaviglilive.it lists further information on events along the canal. Map of Aberbargoed 2016.
