The Great Famine in Mayo:

Map Mayo Ireland for Among those with physical illness, emotional responses have also been shown to impact upon quality of life. For example, both depression and anxiety symptoms measured within fifteen days of a heart attack were found to predict low QoL at four months, although depression was the strongest predictor Lane et al Similarly, among cancer patients, anxiety and depression were both related to the QoL dimensions of emotional, physical and social functioning, pain, fatigue depression only, and global QoL, although as in Lane’s study, depression was more strongly associated Skarstein et al Studies of the impact of pain on patient wellbeing may offer some explanation as to why depression is commonly associated with QoL, as pain is strongly associated with depressed mood see Chapter One study that examined both pain and depression is that of Rosenfeld et al. who conducted a prospective survey of over four hundred AIDS patients in New York; per cent of participants reported frequent or persistent pain in the preceding two weeks. Comparing scores across a range of QoL indices between those who were and those who were not currently experiencing pain revealed significant differences between the groups in terms of psychological distress, depression, feelings of hopelessness and global QoL. The analyses controlled for other possible influences on the QoL indices, such as age or gender, and social support which itself was an independent predictor of distress. These results are consistent with many pain studies, showing that pain affects a broad range of psychosocial functioning. Also of importance is the finding that race was significantly related to QoL and distress, with nonwhite patients reporting poorer QoL and more distress. Map Mayo Ireland 2016.
