It may well be that in the immediate aftermath of a trauma, the person may benefit from some degree of avoidance of thinking about the trauma, only allowing themselves to think about it and deal with it over a longer period. n Treating PTSD Following a traumatic incident, many people experience PTSD-like symptoms for a limited period. Many will also recover from them in the weeks following the incident. However, where these are persistent and distressing for at least one month, people may be diagnosed as having PTSD. In such cases, the optimum treatment seems to be very similar to debriefing, as it involves repeated exposure to memories of the event.
