THE SPA

Newly refurbished, Cliveden’s spa is set within the house’s original walled garden. Take a dip in the ‘Profumo Pool’ – the only listed outdoor pool in England and where Profumo allegedly met Keeler – and relax in style in the two outdoor hot tubs or on one of the luxuriously wide sun loungers. For cooler days, there’s an elegant indoor pool with chaise longue-style loungers at either end. Both pools are large enough to swim lengths. Soothe away any aches and pains in the large infrared sauna or the steam room and Jacuzzi.

There are seven treatment rooms, and a large spa menu. IT WORKED FOR ME’

H&F’s fitness editör Sarah Ivory tries a sports massage therapy.

What? Soft Tissue Therapy; £57 for 30 minutes, £80 for 60 minutes.

Where? Pure Sports Medicine puresportsmed.com)This therapy involves massaging the body’s soft tissue (ligaments, muscles, tendons and fascia) to release tension. It’s great for both sports- and non- sports injuries, but I have both – sports-induced Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis, plus shoulder and hip pain caused by carrying my 10-month- old daughter. ‘First, massage therapist RachaelGiordani takes me into a therapy room to discuss my medical and sports history. Next, there’s a physical assessment: Rachael gets me to stand and raise my arms in different directions, then asks me to lie down as she mobilises my hip joint by moving my knee back and forth. The results are telling – I have tight rhomboid, deltoid and rotator cuff muscles, as well as a lack of motion in my left hip.

‘The treatment is targeted massage, which begins with gentle trigger therapy around my back and progresses to more rigorous work on the rotator cuff and shoulder muscles. This is followed by massaging the other problem areas – glutes, calves, quads and plantar fascia. Rachael checks the pressure feels OK – it’s uncomfortable, but in a good way, as it signifies the release of tension.‘Treatment over, Rachael reassesses my mobility and I notice my left arm lifts higher and my left leg moves freely. Then Rachael suggests conditioning exercises from one of the clinic’s physios that will prevent the problem recurring, plus soft tissue therapy every three weeks. I may at last overcome my injuries!’
