Thucydides participated in and wrote about the Peloponnesian War, a conflict between the city-states of Athens and Sparta that lasted the better part of three decades. Hobbes appears to have well learned the lesson on power that Thucydides taught. As Thucydides recounts, the islanders of Melos requested that they be left out of the war and given liberty to pursue their own business rather than pay tribute to Athens. The Athenians refused, responding that they could not, or would not, give up their imperial prerogatives. The Athenians justified their proposed destruction of the Melians by invoking a law of nature: the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must. Karab¼k Province 2016.
