While clinical outcomes can be assessed in an objective manner such as observing improved physical functioning or reduced symptomatology, assessing patient wellbeing requires that the view of the patient be sought. For example, in clinical trials such as those conducted to test the efficacy of a new drug and intervention studies psychological or clinical, it is important to evaluate clinical outcomes such as symptom reduction but also the individual’s own perceptions of how the treatment or intervention has influenced their illness experience and their general psychosocial functioning. Quality of life QoL research has become a major area of multidisciplinary research for a variety of reasons. One likely reason is that because technological advances in medicine can effectively treat more conditions that in previous generations people would have died from, for example major strokes, heart attacks and many forms of cancer, people are living longer, often with some dependency needs or with some aspect of their life restricted. A consequence of this is growing acceptance, primarily within the medical domain, of the importance of knowing about and understanding the psychosocial as well as the clinical outcomes of treatments or interventions. Having this fuller knowledge has implications for future care, treatment and service provision. Kansas County Map 2016.
