Italy Country for While the difference between modernism and postmodernism is real enough, overlapping concerns persist. Thus many of the early polemics exchanged between modernists”who carry on and critically reconstruct the unfinished Enlightenment project of humanistically transforming the world in the name of rational progress”and postmodernists”who suggest that the Enlightenment project is historically exhausted, epistemologically 98 thinking politics bankrupt, and ethically censorable”are now giving way to more synthetic efforts of accommodation and dialogue.51 Postmodernists acknowledge that identity is formed through interaction. Hence the regulation of interaction according to rational processes, in deference to standards of justice, and mindful of the prerogatives of freedom remains, or should remain, a crucial component of their concerns. Modernists, in turn, build their theories of social interaction on shaky ground unless they inquire into the manner in which the identities of actors are constructed and sustained. At base, both modern and postmodern political theorists are concerned with that realm of public affairs wherein various forms of power meet resistance and wrestle with freedom. With this in mind, modern and postmodernist theorists have much to gain from an open, mutual exchange. Italy Country 2016.
