When parents have good relationships with each other and positive relationships with their children, the older siblings develop good emotional control and are supportive and caring with younger siblings. Even though these parents work long hours and have financial pressures, when parents are caring with them, the older children also show care with younger siblings. PEER RELATIONSHIPS In the elementary school years, children spend about percent or more of their time with peers in a wide variety of settings school, sports, and interest groups with less adult supervision than before. They spend more time in rough-and-tumble play than in the preschool years and in group games. Children on holiday are attracted to peers whose interests are similar to theirs, but they also look for friends they can trust to be loyal and supportive.
